How to use the CDL Help App

CDL Help is not just a tool for preparing for CDL tests for non-English speaking individuals; it's your personal assistant in learning English—an essential skill for a successful truck driving career in the USA. Specifically designed for non-English speakers, our app provides access to over 1,000 questions with instant translations into your native language. By switching between languages in real-time, you can also learn English vocabulary as you study.

About Full and Express versions Our app offers two modes of exam preparation – Full and Express.

  • The "Express" version is a simplified version that contains the most frequently asked questions in the tests. Sufficient for most states.
  • The "Full" version covers a broader range of questions and is intended for complete and thorough preparation on all topics (General Knowledge, Combination, Air Brakes). Recommended in New York and California.

These versions cover most of the questions that may appear on the exam.

DMV Tests

Although CDL tests in different states are often similar in meaning, unfortunately, they can vary significantly in wording, translation, and the software used. Differences between the original questions in English and the DMV translation into another language make passing the exam difficult. Our team puts a lot of effort into manually translating the questions to make the content as close to the original as possible.

It can be challenging to find practice tests where the wording of the questions exactly matches those used by the DMV. That's why we recommend that, during your preparation, you focus on understanding the meaning of the questions and answers rather than simply memorizing them. Relying on memorization alone often results in failing the exam.

The DMV uses an extensive database that includes hundreds of questions. During the exam, you will not have to answer all of these questions. You will be given 100 questions from three different categories (General Knowledge, Combination, Air Brakes). These questions are selected randomly by the DMV system. If you do not pass the test on the first attempt, you will be presented with different questions on the retake, and only a small portion of them may repeat. This is done to maintain the necessary level of difficulty and fairness in testing your knowledge.

Tests in the CDL Help App

CDL Help is an app offering two types of preparation for the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) test - “Express” and “Full” versions. The practice tests will help you get a driver’s license to operate commercial vehicles in the USA.

The "Express" version is a simplified version that contains the most commonly asked questions in the tests. For the vast majority of states, this preparation is quite sufficient since they use almost the same question database in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

However, in some states, the question database slightly differs from the main test version - it is more extensive. In these states, it is recommended to study the "Full" version of the tests for the most effective preparation.

Texas

When taking the exam in Texas, you will need to pass an additional test on knowledge in the field of operating commercial vehicles. This exam assesses your understanding of traffic rules, safety, and specific aspects of working with commercial transport. The exam consists of theoretical questions covering a wide range of topics, from basic traffic rules to more complex issues related to the operation and maintenance of commercial vehicles.

You can prepare for the Texas test (Texas CVO) by following the link.

California

In California, if you obtained your driver’s license less than a year ago, you may be required to take additional tests beyond the main CDL exams. Typically, this includes a Road Signs Test to assess your knowledge of U.S. road signs and tests on general traffic rules (similar to those for passenger cars). It is also advisable to study the "Full" version of the tests specific to California.

What is the probability that I will pass the test if I use CDL Help?

The vast majority of our users who prepared using our app successfully pass their tests. While many rely solely on our app, we still recommend that you also review the Commercial Driver's Handbook for the state where you plan to take the exam.

As mentioned earlier, the wording of some questions and answers in the tests may differ but be similar in meaning. Please note that we cannot know how responsibly you approached the preparation process and how well you know the English language. For these reasons, we cannot guarantee you a 100% pass rate.

According to feedback from our users in different states, if you thoroughly study the commercial driver's handbooks for your state and actively practice in the app, understanding the meaning of the questions and answers, you have a high chance of success.

Tips for Preparing for CDL Tests

When taking the exam at the DMV, it is important not to panic, even if the questions and answers seem unfamiliar. The fact is that questions and answers at the DMV may be slightly rephrased. This is done to make it harder for those who memorize questions and answers to pass the tests. However, despite possible changes in wording, the meaning of the questions and answers remains the same.

This emphasizes how important it is to understand the meaning of each question and answer, rather than just memorizing them. The CDL Help app will teach you to grasp the essence of the question through its instant translation feature. We put in a lot of effort to ensure high-quality manual translation of all questions in the app. But we know that many DMVs use Google Translate for test translations during the exam. Our app also offers this translation option for those who want to simulate the real test conditions as closely as possible.

Our team is actively working on updating and expanding the question database to provide our users with a complete and up-to-date version of the tests. We want every CDL Help app user to be confident in their knowledge and skills when taking the DMV exam, regardless of the wording of the questions. Therefore, during exam preparation, it is important to study the material thoroughly, trying to understand the essence of each question and answer. This will help you successfully handle any variations of the questions you may encounter on the real exam.

We also recommend studying the Commercial Driver's Handbook for the state where you plan to take the exam.

Function “Shuffle Questions”

The CDL Help app contains a number of useful features that can simplify the process of preparing for the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) exam. "Shuffle Questions" is one such feature. Its essence is that the order of questions changes each time you start the test. This helps to test the depth and strength of your knowledge, and also prepares you for real exam conditions, where the order of questions will be different.

If you disable this feature, the questions will be presented to you in the same order every time you take the test. This can be useful at the beginning of your studies, when you are just getting acquainted with the materials and need a more structured approach. This mode will help you quickly master and remember the necessary material.

After thoroughly studying the tests and checking your knowledge, you can enable the "Shuffle Questions" feature again. This will add complexity but will teach you to adapt to the flow of unpredictable questions that will await you at the DMV.

Practice Mode

To make the test preparation process more effective, our app has a special practice mode. This mode allows you to freely move between questions in the tests, view them in any sequence, and return to previous questions without any restrictions. This can be especially useful if you want to focus on certain topics or work on your mistakes.

Voice-over for Questions

The CDL Help app is designed with different learning styles in mind and offers a voice-over feature for questions, providing an audio representation of questions and answers from tests.

Listening to the audio track of questions and answers can be especially helpful for those learning English. It will help you better understand and get used to the specific terminology used in CDL exams, as well as prepare for the oral driving school exam, which usually precedes getting a Permit.

iOS device users should be aware of potential sound issues. If you notice that the audio does not play when you press the play button, check if your device is in silent mode. Some users have encountered problems with sound playback when their device was set to silent mode.

Pre-trip Inspection

Getting a driver's license in the United States involves several steps. After passing the theory test to get a Temporary Driver's Permit at the DMV, the next step is to learn practical driving skills at a CDL school.

After completing your training at the driving school, besides the practical driving test, you will also need to pass an oral test. It's important to note that this test is conducted only in English, which can be challenging for newcomers.

It's worth noting that the requirements and questions asked by examiners can vary in different states and DMV offices. However, about 70% of the information will be the same across all states. Our guide will give you the basics for preparing for this part of the exam, but we recommend reinforcing your knowledge at the driving school. There, they can share more detailed information about what to pay attention to when taking the exam in your specific city or state.
